May 10, 2012 CBC radio is launching it’s online radio station just down from the Citizen A studio space on James St. North here in Hamilton, Ontario. I was grabbing a coffee downstairs at Mulberry Coffeehouse, and was interviewed briefly by CBC Video Journalist Jessica Young on my feelings about the station’s launch.

Unfortunately I was feeling self-conscious about a zit on my lip, and missed the opportunity to say something intelligent or articulate. I think all I said was something like “I love CBC!”

But I do love CBC… and I think the quality of CBC’s journalism, meeting Hamilton’s deep well of local talent will result in good things for all.

I wish CBC Hamilton the best with their startup – and I look forward to tuning in.

CLIENT: Radio Free Universe
PROJECT TYPE: Illustration + Promo Photography

In order to get away from the another “rock band looking disinterested or pissed off” promotional photograph, we took a series of portraits of the band members and digitally com positioned them together. Individual portraits allowed for the selection of the best image of each band member, and what appears to be an effective final composition.

Citizen A was additionally commissioned to complete 2 illustrations for RFU’s upcoming rock EP “Evil Six”. A two headed bird creature was to be added to the pre-existing logo as well as the band’s full name. A simple “evil six” logo was created for the back track listing.

CITIZEN A will be hosting a photo exhibit of Hamilton-based graphic designer and photographer Amber Edgar for the upcoming Hamilton Art Crawl on Friday, March 9. The exhibit runs from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm. All are welcome to come view the photos and enjoy a complementary hot chocolate. Purchase opportunities will also be available.

In the winter of 2011, Edgar took a commercial flight from Hamilton to Calgary. Mesmerized by the ever-morphing patterns and shapes of the geography and landscape far below, this series of aerial photographs soars above the Canadian shield, over snow-covered Badlands and spills into the rigid grid system of the western prairies.

“The lighting that day was great,” says Edgar. “So often you’re on a plane and you can’t see much below, but on this day everything was crystal clear. What I was seeing was amazing, breathtaking, and not from a vantage point I can get everyday. So I spent the entire flight with my face and camera jammed up against the window. Some of the images look more like abstract paintings or modern designs than aerial photographs of the Canadian landscape.”
“I processed most of the images in black and white, as I felt it best emphasizes the bizarre shapes created by an ever-changing terrain. As I got further out west, the sparkling gold and rich blue hues that the evening sun created on the Badlands and prairies was fantastic, so these photos remained colour. The sun, the landscape and man-made infrastructure were collectively painting my canvas – I was simply capturing and framing what was happening below. The evident diversity of our country’s enormous and vast landscape is incredible. I feel a lot of gratitude to be Canadian, I hope this series will inspire people to appreciate and protect our natural resources.”

Purchase opportunities: Prints will be available at an affordable price point, so you can walk away with your favourite image. Additionally there will be a few large 20″ x 30″ ready-to-hang, frameless ‘floating wraps’.
